Gann Museum - Benton, Arkansas
Located in Central Arkansas is a delightful museum to visit while on your Arkansas vacation. The pink and white hand-sawed blocks of bauxite created the medical building of Drs. Gann Sr. and Junior in 1893. It is the only building in the world to have been constructed our of pink alumina block which comes from the ore of aluminum which is called bauxite. The house was built for the Doctors to pay off their bills when they didn’t have the cash or other ability to pay. The labor was valued at ten cents an hour. In this manner both the Doctor and the patient felt they were treated fairly. The building is now a museum but when it was donated to the city of Benton in 1946 it was to be used as a library. In 1980 the building was turned into the Gann museum and filled with furniture and artifacts reflecting local pioneer, Native American and church history.
