Sciatica can be extremely painful and uncomfortable
Is the Latin word for “discomfort down the back of the leg” Sciatica is referred pain usually caused by trapping the sciatic nerve in the base of the back. The sciatic nerve travels from the lower back down through the buttocks and through the back of the leg. Sciatica is pain travelling this nerve and is a fairly common type of back pain and is usually caused by stress on the sciatic nerve because of a herniated or bulging disc. The pain from sciatica can vary from rare and irritating to extreme and crippling. Normally, it affects only one side, the pain moving through the buttock and down the leg and is frequently linked with a constant pain on one side of the buttocks, pain in the leg and/or buttock that may be worse when seated. Other sensations are a burning or tingling down the leg, weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the leg or foot or a shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up. Though Sciatica can be extremely painful and uncomfortable, it is unusual that permanent nerve harm (tissue injury) results. Most pain is due to swelling and will improve within a span of time. Nerve pain is caused by a combination of pressure and swelling on the nerve root, and dealing with it is focused on relieving both of these conditions.
