Where can I find a course to learn american sign language?

I really want to learn sign language. I might have trouble pronouncing the words of foreign languages, but with sign language I don’t have to worry about that. I just have to learn the signs for the words that I already use all the time. For some reason this seems so much easier to me. Friends have taught me a few words, but where can I find a course in amercian sign language that I can take in order to get proficient? I would like to be able to work as a sign language translator off and on to make a little extra money.
