When I left my abusive marriage, i left with a $5000 debt to my in-laws, in addition to other debts. And I had left my lucrative paying job to pursue obtaining my masters degree, and was working on-call in a county hospital. It didn’t take a genius to know that I needed to budget my money very carefully. The best advice I received about credit cards was to enter each credit card purchase in my check register and deduct the amount from the balance; I never worried about paying the credit card bill off each month, because I knew I had the money in my account.
